Camberwell Green Market

My good friend Yukkiko Ikehara snapped this picture of me rumaging through my stock of cards at the Christmas market on Camberwell Green this Saturday.
A rainy start followed by bright sunshine, the day ended well with plenty of good card and print sales, and a nice local vibe.

But boy was it cold !

Mid Century Prints

Hello Mr Magpie & how is your wife.

One of the three Giclee prints shown at the Mid Century Modern Show
at Dulwich college. This image sold out, but I'm sure I will be printing more at some point.
The other two prints are shown above titles Silflay and Harvest

Anna Findlay 1885 - 1968

I fear I'm posting more images by other designers than my own. However the work of Anna Findlay 1885 - 1968 was just too good not to add here. I discovered this wonderful print on the excellent Modern Print blog an extensive and lovingly compiled blog highlighting the very best lino print and woodcut artists working mainly in the mid Nineteenth and Twentieth Century. The images on this blog are always well chosen, and are accompanied by carefully researched and considered information coupled with useful biographical detail. Anna Findlay was a student of the Grovesnor School, but little else is known about her after she left. I will certainly endeavour to seek out more of her prints if I can.

Stefan Kanchev

Stefan kanchev 1915-2001

I never could resist a simplified bird form. Stefan Kanchev was a Bulgarian designer working in a nuumber of fields including postage stamps and logo design.

I love the way here he's balanced one wing on top of the other !

This is the last of three posts all highlighting some forgotten names of design.

The next post will be something of my own.

Lora Lamm

Lora Lamm, another forgotten name this time from Switzerland, she worked a lot in Italy in the 50's and 60's making vibrant contributions to the golden age of
fashion illustration coming out of Milan.
These two hats I think really are quite wonderful.

Hans Tisdall

A great image from the relatively forgotten designer Hans Tisdall.Tisdall was born in Munich and settled in Britain in 1930. His clear coloured illustrative style was highly suitable to the task of making staple knowledge attractive for children, in Balbus, A Picture Book of Building 1944 Tisdall shows this to great effect. Tisdall was also a very gifted painter and producer of designs for printed textiles.

As an addendum to my recent show of cycling prints
I thought I'd add this wonderful picture of the great grimpuer Charley Ghaul

My next post will be non cycling related

This week’s cultural highlight was the private view of Journeys of a Randonneur– cycling themed prints by the very talented Andrew Pavitt. Currently showing at London’s pre-eminent cycling cafĂ© Look Mum No Hands! until 3rd April, these linocut prints are both striking and stylish – a cool mix of nostalgia, dynamism and just a hint of Gallic je-ne-sais-quoi. Each print in an edition is subtly different due to Pavitt’s printing technique, which, he told me, involves using a wooden spoon. A framed print of The Fixer will soon be adorning my kitchen wall, safeguarding my red Voyager bicycle from punctures. Touch wood.

And I should say merci to M. Pavitt for introducing me to a new word: randonneur – hiker, rambler; touring cyclist (according to my Oxford Hachette French dictionary).
